Girona Situation Update 26th April 2021

I have changed the format of the Situation update for Girona as things have moved along and the questions we are now receiving are beginning to change.

Travel Restrictions: The Catalan authority website has a FAQ section with more information on travel.

The situation regarding foreign travel specifically what is allowed and when things might change is something we are monitoring very closely.

Travel into Spain and Catalunya is currently allowed and no border is closed inside the Schengen area.

Travellers must meet the documentary requirements, a negative PCR test for example. For more info on this check the ministry of health website here.

Travel from the UK is still restricted by the UK government, but the UK Government has launched a traffic light scheme which they will update giving the status of travel to different countries, this from the end of May.

Vaccination rates in Girona: The EU vaccination process has been somewhat delayed but is now gathering pace significantly with new daily records set and broken. In Catalunya we have some of the highest rates of vaccinations in Spain.

In Catalunya as of the 20th of April,  20% of the population had recieved the 1st dose and around 7% have had the second dose.

In Girona city itself the numbers are around 30k people with one dose and 3k with 2

In Catalunya we have seen over 250k people vaccinated in the last few days alone and mass vaccination centres are popping up.

Covid numbers here in Catalunya:

As mentioned before the numbers can change very quickly. These are the statistics at the time of posting.

Restrictions in place in Girona and Catalunya

The Catalan and Spanish authorities generally review the restrictions every two weeks, I will here outline the measures that relate most to our clients and visitors that are applied from Monday the 26th of April.

As with the UK and other countries, social distancing is recommended and people are asked to limit their social interactions, and masks must be worn in public.

Restrictions continue to change, from Monday the 26th of April the Government plans to lift the county level lockdown.

l Bar and Restaurants – from December 21 bars and restaurants can only open indoor and outdoor seating areas to the public from 7:30am to 17:30.

Establishments can only accommodate 30% of their regular capacity. Inside, only up to four people can sit at the same table. Everyone must wear a face mask when not eating or drinking.

Take-away can be provided until 10pm for dinner, with delivery services until 11pm, but dining areas must remain shut. Hotel restaurants, however, are allowed to serve their guests dinner.

In-person dining hours do not apply to bars and restaurants located at highway rest stops, but those inside shopping malls cannot open all.

l Mobility – No mobility restrictions throughout Catalunya.

l Curfew – People must remain home between 10pm and 6am.

l Shops and shopping malls can open at 30% capacity. Large retailers no longer have caps on the maximum amount of space they can open.

l Public transport – Including services such as buses, trains, and the subway, it will continue running as usual.

l Schools – Educational centres, including primary and secondary schools, remain open.

l Cycling – You are able to cycle in groups of up to 6 and riders can ride in the Girona county and into the surrounding counties as well.

Bike Breaks covid protocol

Flexibility and booking changes:  Bike breaks aims to be as flexible as possible with any bookings. If you think you will need to rent a bike in Girona at some point we will make that possible

At Bike Breaks we have gone above and beyond to make sure our shop,
travel agency and rental centre are clean and safe for our clients.

We are hopeful that in 2021 some restrictions will be lifted but in the meantime we are fully prepared.

We keep a close eye on regional covid measures and monitor the
Catalan and Spanish authority channels to ensure we operate legally,
responsibly and safely and to keep our clients updated on new locally
inforced Covid measures.

Bike Breaks news

We have almost finished building up the new bikes for the 2021 season.

Also we are now able to run the weekly Thursday shop ride again, with limited numbers of course.

We have also added a new section to our website, giving people the chance to do some bike packing in the Girona area. All the resources you would need to put a trip together.

Hi Andy, The best advice i have found is from the Gen Cat website (Catalan Government)the link is in the blog. But it seems that muhc depends on the country you are travelling fromand retruning to afterwards. There is now talk of vaccine certificates making more travel possible and less restricted. I hope that this is helpful and we can see you this summer !
