Girona Gala for Qhubeka – group ride fun & a fantastic evening out!

It´s yet another Tuesday, however we are feeling a little more on the tired side this week after an eventful, fun-filled weekend!

We were honoured and very happy to help where we could for this year´s Girona Gala for Qhubeka. Following 2016´s highly successful evening and a very worth while event fundraising for Qhubeka, we had our hands up a while back to step up and support it.

For those that are not aware, ´Qhubeka is a not-for-profit organisation that donates bicycles as part of the World Bicycle Relief’s charity programme in South Africa, supported by the Dimension Data UCI World Tour cycling team´.

The Girona Gala was created in 2016 by professional Girona based cyclists, Nathan Haas and Matt Brammeier, alongside Laura Fletcher of ´The Peloton Brief´. Their commitment and time put into the Gala both years has been impressive and Saturday night certainly proved to be another huge success. Well done team!

To kick start the weekend with our own fundraising effort, we began a three day Qhubeka special via our fresh new online shop and in store at The Bike Breaks Boutique – offering a wide range of pro cycling kit, our own Girona line, accessories and more! Over three days, for every item purchased, 10% went to Qhubeka. A special thanks to all customers over this period – your support it much appreciated.

Our biggest project of the weekend, was Saturday´s ride – the pre Girona Gala for Qhubeka group ride. When Nathan and Laura asked us to run the ride, we were more than happy to. We had ride leaders and a support vehicle to help and what a stunning day we had. A HUGE turnout to support the event and a fantastic day was had for all. A day like Saturday, really proves the great community feel we have in Girona. So many friendly, local and visiting faces made it a special one. It was the perfect kick start to a big day and night ahead. Thank you all for making our day stress free, social and enjoyable.

With little time to rest, we were soon glamming up for the Gala. A rare opportunity for us to get dressed up and socialise out of cycling kit!

We were warmly welcomed into the excellent location choice, the old Girona Casino – beautiful, classic and historic. Plenty of friendly, excited faces; familiar and from afar, hummed away while catching up on things over a glass of cava before retreating upstairs.

Once seated, we enjoyed a delicous meal from the highly reputable Local Market Girona. (At Bike Breaks, we also choose Local Market for any catering needs and we have done for years. Very much recommended – they are the best)!

While chatting away over dinner, the auction kicked off with a bang. An impressive line of items were up for grabs, including a list of exciting prizes/giveaways, as well as multiple donated and signed race jerseys and more from Girona based professional cyclists. Many of these pro riders were also in attendance, which was fantastic to see.

We were keeping our eyes on one prize…of course, the bike! Drawn last, the pressure was on. Following several battles and counter bids, we successfully brought it home. It will now proudly hang in Bike Breaks, alongside our collection of cycling memorabilia.

Following the auction and fundraising efforts, it was time for the raffle draw where a huge range of prizes had been generously donated from local and beyond companies, all to support the cause. Very impressive!

With many happy raffle and auction winners, it was about time to hit the bar where mojitos, G & Ts and beers were on the menu. A big bonus and motive to buy beverages was that the bar was donating all profits to Qhubeka. So each drink purchased was well worth it! 🙂

A bit of mingling and several mojitos later, the dfloor began to buzz, and sooner or later it was booming. Some fantastic moves and laughs were shared throughout the night and safe to say we wandered home in the early hours with tired, yet satisfied legs. Aside from Sas of course, who rode the Qhubeka bike home in style!

A special thanks to Nathan, Laura and their support team for creating such an enjoyable evening for our Girona community and what a cause to get behind. We are all about getting more people on bikes and strongly believe in the Qhubeka motto that #BicyclesChangeLives. Thank you and until next year!
