Exploring the Girona area by bike
The Pyrenees has a long history and many links to cycling, famous for tour stages like Touralet, Hautacam and Col d’ Aubisque.
The South-eastern end of the of the mountain range however is less well-known and massively underrated, less crowded with less bikes and importantly cars, it’s a challenging a beautiful place to go cycling. Although this area can be reached from Girona the days are a little long with big kms. This guide aims to allow people to ride these mountains but to make the stages a little more managable.
We have explored here in this guide the Mountains of Vallter, Mare del Deu del Mont as well as off the beaten track options like Coll de Jou. We have used the village of Llanars and specifically the Hotel Grevol as a cycling base in this region for many years, check out below our guide to this location. I have run countless tours from here over the years and it really is a great place to be based.
Our chosen hotel to be the base in the Pyrenees is Hotel Grevol, click the button for more information and to book your stay.More Info
You have here GPX routes to and from the Pyrenees and a choice of four different circular routes from Hotel Grevol. If you need a GPS unit we offer the Wahoo Roam which comes pre-loaded with the routes.
These two routes take you to the Hotel and return you to Girona from it:
36 FROM GIRONA CITY TO HOTEL GREVOL
This ride takes riders from the city up into the Pyrenees and the base at Llanars.
A tough day on the bike as there is a fair amount of climb to do.Click to ride
35 RETURN TO GIRONA FROM HOTEL GREVOL
After a few days exploring the Pyrenees this ride returns to Girona city passing the lake at Banyoles.Click to ride
These routes are optional circulars from the hotel:
40 CIRCULAR VALLTER FROM HOTEL GREVOL
This is a fairly uncomplicated loop as you can see from the profile, it is a chance to climb the famous Vallter 2000 straight from the hotel. Vallter is a HC climb that has featured as a mountain top finish stage in the Volta Catalunya and even the Tour de France.Click to ride
39 CIRCULAR OIX AND BEGET HOTEL GREVOL
This has to be one of the most beautiful rides in this area. Challenging and technical, this fantastic ribbon of tarmac winds its way onto beautiful hills and mountains passing the two stunning medieval stone villages of Oix and Beget. One of the most memorable rides I have ever done.Click to ride
38 CIRCULAR COLL DE JOU HOTEL GREVOL
This is a hard route into the high mountains. Coll de Jou is one of the toughest but least well known of the Pyrenean mountain passes in this part of the range. The road surfaces is rough in places, but the traffic is extremely light if in fact do you see any cars at all.Click to ride
27 CIRCULAR HOTEL GREVOL – MARE DE DÉU DEL MONT
This is a truly epic Pyrenean ride, climbing Mare de Déu del Mont and Coll d’Ares in the same day. This route crosses the border into France over the mountains twice. An extremely challenging route with some truly inspirational Pyrenean riding.Click to ride
