Final results from the European cup
After a long and difficult season with alot of mechanical problems and bad luck the Bike breaks team went to Flims in Switzerland for the final race in the series.
In less than perfect conditions Bike Breaks rider Dave Welch was able to qualifiy at the back of the grid after his gears jammed at the start. Dave then snapped his chain in his second run but finished on foot and was able to achieve third place in his category (master 30). The results for the year are as follows......
1 BISHOP Aidan (RAPIDRACERS/TREK/MAVIC-TREK) 621,00
Epreuve Dossard Pos Points Coeff Total
2 OLIVARES Salvador (SALVA OLIVARES-LAPIERRE) 596,00
Epreuve Dossard Pos Points Coeff Total
3 WELCH Dave (BikeBreaks-Mongoose) 550,00
Epreuve Dossard Pos Points Coeff Total
Once again we would like to thank all the sponsors for their help and support this season Mulebar for fueling the riders, zeroflats used by the whole team who sustained no punctures at all during the whole competition !! Mongoose bikes which have worked without fault all year, Blacxseatposts, who's new model is out now and much improved and of course Bike breaks the girona cycle centre powering the team throughout.... watch this space for next year.....
Team Bike Breaks/Mongoose at the Megavalanche.
Bike Breaks team riders Marc Whitelaw and Dave Welch made the trek to the Alps for the largest mountain bike race in the world with 2000 competitors, the longest downhill race in the world and one of the most crazy things any mountain biker will ever do!
The weather was perfect for a change and we enjoyed four blazing days of Alpine sun. The trail conditons were also fantastic, training the two race tracks was a pleasure.
Friday's qualification went exactly to plan with Bike Breaks rider Dave qualifying on the front row of the Saturday's challenger race with Marc right behind him on the second row, a very close and fast race.
The Mega Challenger race on the following Saturday was the most physically difficult that I can remember with 33km of technical dowhnill starting at 3300m altitude. There was more snow than in previous years meaning the riders had to run 2 km in 30cm deep snow at 3000m altitude, a test of fitness and commitment. The famous course this year had some changes to include more pedalling making the track even more physical.
Bike Breaks rider Dave Welch finished 9th overall and 3rd Master 30 getting a welcome podium finish for Team Bike Breaks/Mongoose. Team rider Marc finished a respectable 30th in the senior category, a great result for the rider in his first Megavalanche race, look for big things next season!
Team Bike Breaks/Mongoose would like to send a special thanks to MONGOOSE, CANNONDALE, MEDINA LLAGOSTERA, MULE BAR, ZEROFLATS and BIKE BREAKS GIRONA CYCLE CENTRE.
For more info, pics and vids from Marcs helmet cam see our facebook page.....
Finally everyone at the Girona Cycle Centre wishes Marc's bro a speedy recovery after his crash.... Get well soon Nick!!!
The results are in from the first two races in this years European cup. After two of the most wet and muddy races i can remember Team Bike Breaks member Dave Welch now stands 8th in the Master 30 Cat.
The first race this year in Andorra in the Pyrenees was very popular as ever with just over 500 riders turning up to try to qualify for the Europe cup. The course in Andorra is pretty technical and physically demanding as normal, this year made more difficult by rain during Fridays practice session.
Thankfully there was no more rain on Saturday morning for the qualification. Bike Breaks rider Dave Welch snapped his chain but still managed to finish 18th just scrapping through to qualify for the Europe cup. Bike Breaks rider Marc Whitelaw just missed out on the Euro race but made the front row of the grid for the Maxi Challenger race.
Sunday saw dark clouds and the threat of more rain. In the first run both Team bike Breaks riders made it down without problem and after some frantic bike cleaning set off back to the top for round two. The heavens opened up once again at the start of round two and more rain fell, Dave made it down to finish a resepectable19th in his category after starting at the back of the grid and Marc suffered a puncture and was unable to finish.
Round two, Samoens in the French Alps was a total mud festival, with 12 hours of torrential rain on the Friday the track was water logged and slippery.
The new format for qualifications confronted riders with 4 separate tracks to complete in one day, and partly due to the conditions suited the downhill riders the most. Team Bike Breaks more used to the sunny dust covered trails found when cycling in Girona struggled in the mud, however Dave managed to qualify, again at the back of the grid, with Marc taking his now normal position at the front of the challenger race.
After still more rain during the night Sunday's race looked uncertain as the second chair lift riders used to get the top was frozen together in the sub zero temperatures. Finally after a delayed start as race officials tried to repair the lift, the first round began half way down the planned course. After sliding, running and falling down the slime covered mountain both Team Bike Breaks riderS came down safely if a little wet. The second round started at the top as planned, after the ski lift had been thawed out, in the snow and was a much longer, more physical run down. Again both Bike Breaks riders made it down safe, Dave placing 23rd in his cat. and Marc an amazing 4th in the senior cat. of the challenger race in his second ever marathon race ever!!!!!
For more pics of the kit destruction see our facebook page. Thanks to all our sponsors Girona Cycle Centre, Mule Bar, Mongoose, Medina Llagostera, Zero Flats.
Looking forward now to the Mega Avalanche in July and the remaining European races later on in the year.
The Cannondale six 105, our chosen road hire bike, has won the coverted Cycling Plus bike of the year award.
